With etymological roots related to the term “winter abode”, in the 19th century, saunas were always the first building erected during construction of a new home.
The sauna was considered a sacred place stemming from the fire which was seen as a heavenly gift, and the steam produced by water on the burning stones representing life and the ascension of the soul.
The purity of the sauna thus made it a holy place for birth, recovery and eternal rest.
Sauna remains part of everyday life in Finnish culture, with most all civic buildings and private homes containing a sauna area.
Over the years, this culture of sauna has extended from Northern Europe across the world, becoming one of the most ancient, natural and effective practices of wellness.
